GL vs. CEM vs. ISEB: Understanding the Exam Boards
Not all 11+ exams are the same. Learn the key differences to prepare effectively.
GL Assessment
GL Assessment is the most common exam board. It tends to be more topic-based and predictable.
- Format: Typically multiple-choice or standard format.
- Subjects: Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
- Preparation: Practice papers are widely available and very effective.
CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring)
CEM exams are designed to be "tutor-proof" and rely more on natural ability and a broad vocabulary.
- Format: Often mixed sections with tight time limits.
- Subjects: Verbal Reasoning (includes English), Numerical Reasoning (Maths), and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
- Preparation: Focus on vocabulary building and speed.
ISEB (Independent Schools Examinations Board)
ISEB is used primarily by independent schools. The Common Pre-Test is a popular online adaptive test.
- Format: Online, adaptive (gets harder/easier based on answers).
- Subjects: English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
- Preparation: Familiarity with online testing formats is crucial.
